ANB/ANS Camp 87, Alaska State Commission for Human Rights, and Anchorage Equal Rights Commission to co-host 1st Annual Statewide Civil Rights Conference September 29, 2023 (Anchorage, Alaska) – Alaska Native Brotherhood / Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 87, the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights, and the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission are co-hosting the Alaska Native Brotherhood / Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 87 First Annual Statewide Civil Rights Conference in Anchorage on October 14, 2023. “Civil rights are under attack,” said ANB Camp 87 President Marvin Adams. “Just like the Alaska Native Brotherhood and the Alaska Native Sisterhood got out in front of the civil rights movement by lobbying for passage of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945 through our members Elizabeth and Roy Peratrovich, our two organizations see the writing on the wall for another civil rights movement and we want to be out in front again,” Adams added. Zackary Gottshall, Chairperson for the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights, said that his agency is proud to serve as a co-host with the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission. “Our agencies appreciate the long history of ANB and ANS to the cause of fighting for civil rights. ASCHR owes at least a part of its existence directly from the work that ANB and ANS undertook in the 1940s, and we appreciate the spotlight that these leaders are again shining to ensure equal protection for all people,” said Gottshall. Anchorage Equal Rights Commission Chairperson Darrel Hess added, “The Anchorage Equal Rights Commission is honored to partner with the ANB, ANS, and ASCHR to strategize how we respond to discrimination in Alaska.” The conference will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Anchorage, AK, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The conference is free and open to the public, but capacity is limited. Panels will include education, religion, housing, and criminal re-entry, along with a presentation on the ANB/ANS’s civil rights legacy. The lunch keynote speaker will be Cal Williams, who will discuss his own personal experiences championing civil rights after growing up in the segregated South. ANB/ANS Camp 87 is sponsoring a banquet to follow starting at 5:30 featuring comedian Marc Yaffee and Emil Notti, who will be receiving the ANB/ANS Statewide 2023 Civil Rights Award. Anyone interested in purchasing a table to the banquet should contact ANB Camp 87 President Marvin Adams via email to madams@national-capital.com. “This is only a new beginning for civil rights in Alaska. We expect this conference to grow substantially in the coming years,” said Adams. For more information about ASCHR, please visit the Alaska Human Rights website.
